In this episode, Nick investigates the disappearance of Arthur Gordon and the suspected involvement of his stenographer, Pauline Perrot. Nick visits Mrs. Lord, Pauline's landlady, who reveals that Pauline is away on a visit and has sent her trunk in advance. Nick inspects Pauline's room and discovers a torn letter in French, suggesting a romantic relationship between Pauline and Arthur. Meanwhile, Chick Carter interviews Mr. Beckwith, the cashier at Arthur Gordon's Wall Street office, and Mr. Dayton, the only witness who saw Arthur leaving the office.
