00:00:00.050 --> 00:00:01.280
Hello, once again, folks.

00:00:01.280 --> 00:00:05.839
And welcome to another fine episode of forward into the past.

00:00:06.339 --> 00:00:08.599
I am JC Rede, Your host and narrator.

00:00:08.839 --> 00:00:19.489
And today we're going to pick up exactly where we left off last time in the exciting Nick Carter mystery, the call of death or Nick Carter's clever assistant.

00:00:19.850 --> 00:00:26.269
And without any pomp or circumstance, we're going to pick up exactly where we left off with chapter five.

00:00:29.059 --> 00:00:29.859
Chapter five.

00:00:30.510 --> 00:00:31.859
Patsy turns crook.

00:00:33.299 --> 00:00:37.740
Patsy Garvin needed no instructions beyond those contained in Nick Carter's note.

00:00:38.159 --> 00:00:41.700
Nor additional information as to the position Kate Crandell had taken.

00:00:42.329 --> 00:00:45.759
It was plain enough to Patsy and he shaped his course accordingly.

00:00:46.432 --> 00:00:49.622
Knowing that the woman might incidentally have seen him from her window.

00:00:50.152 --> 00:00:53.093
And that she would recall him suspiciously if they met later.

00:00:53.286 --> 00:00:58.665
Patsy entered the corridor of a near building and put on a disguise, with which he was provided.

00:00:59.356 --> 00:01:05.296
It by no means improved him however, for it gave him a decidedly tough and hangdog appearance.

00:01:05.825 --> 00:01:12.275
It's good enough for the work to be done, he tersely soliloquized not anticipating how effectively it was to serve him.

00:01:13.266 --> 00:01:14.376
Returning to the street.

00:01:14.736 --> 00:01:24.516
Patsy found a concealment from which he could stealthily watch the door of the bank building, prepared to await the departure of Kate Crandell or size up any visitor she might receive.

00:01:24.516 --> 00:01:30.890
His vigil was not rewarded until five o'clock when Kate came out and walked quickly up the street.

00:01:32.430 --> 00:01:34.280
Gee, she's a peach all right.

00:01:34.579 --> 00:01:40.905
Thought Patsy sententiously, who until then had, had merely a glimpse at her through her office window.

00:01:41.207 --> 00:01:44.177
She evidently has quit work for the day and is heading for home.

00:01:44.501 --> 00:01:45.850
Patsy was right.

00:01:46.361 --> 00:01:52.441
He also inferred from the woman's darkly handsome face that she was not in an enviable frame of mind.

00:01:53.021 --> 00:01:58.040
He stealthily followed her out of the business district and to an attractive outskirt of the town.

00:01:58.740 --> 00:02:04.710
There just as she was turning a corner, a well-dressed man stepped from a near yard and spoke to her.

00:02:05.305 --> 00:02:08.375
Patsy saw her draw back as if confronted by a stranger.

00:02:08.764 --> 00:02:11.115
And then he saw the man's face and recognized him.

00:02:11.705 --> 00:02:12.784
Holy smoke.

00:02:13.025 --> 00:02:15.094
He muttered slinking back of a tree.

00:02:15.724 --> 00:02:16.754
This does settle it.

00:02:17.175 --> 00:02:17.835
That's Turk McGill.

00:02:18.574 --> 00:02:27.694
Gangster and all around bad egg, as sure as I'm a foot high, she just about employed him to get the gospel dispenser and no, by Jove she don't appear to know him.

00:02:27.914 --> 00:02:30.835
I must be wrong! Cautiously watching them.

00:02:31.014 --> 00:02:36.175
Patsy presently decided that he was right and that Kate Crandell was not acquainted with Turk McGill.

00:02:37.104 --> 00:02:38.335
She remained talking with them.

00:02:38.335 --> 00:02:42.253
Nevertheless, frowning, darkly, while likening to his earnest utterances.

00:02:42.854 --> 00:02:46.394
Yet, occasionally glancing apprehensively toward a house around the corner.

00:02:46.933 --> 00:02:50.343
Gee, he's got something on her, thought Patsy, after a few moments.

00:02:50.883 --> 00:02:53.644
That's dead, open and shut, or she wouldn't listen to him.

00:02:54.014 --> 00:02:56.294
She's doing so under protest, that's a cinch.

00:02:57.024 --> 00:03:11.283
Magill was a well-built florid man, a thousand times more prepossessing externally than within and Patsy quickly saw that the Rascals arguments, persuasion, or of whatever his talk consisted would not immediately prove effective.

00:03:11.493 --> 00:03:16.653
He saw too, that he could not directly approach the couple without incurring suspicion.

00:03:17.193 --> 00:03:23.834
But that he might hasten around the square and approach them through the other street, possibly getting a line on their talk by passing near them.

00:03:25.264 --> 00:03:26.644
Ah, it's worth trying.

00:03:26.764 --> 00:03:30.753
He said to himself, The woman at least cannot give me the slip.

00:03:31.264 --> 00:03:33.123
Patsy did not defer this move.

00:03:33.544 --> 00:03:35.463
Sheltered by the tree, then hiding him.

00:03:35.704 --> 00:03:38.883
He retraced his steps and darted through a near St.

00:03:39.093 --> 00:03:42.963
Presently rounding the square and sauntering toward the couple from the other direction.

00:03:43.593 --> 00:03:45.753
While he was still some 50 yards away.

00:03:45.753 --> 00:03:52.114
However, Kate Crandell abruptly left McGill and hastened to the dwelling at which she had been repeatedly glancing.

00:03:52.963 --> 00:03:55.674
Patsy rightly infer that it was where she boarded.

00:03:56.383 --> 00:04:03.873
He passed her just as she was entering the gate, noting that she looked pale and disturbed and had an ugly gleam in her black eyes.

00:04:04.558 --> 00:04:15.558
Patsy also saw that McGill was watching her from around the corner and knowing the utterly depraved and desperate character of the crook, he instantly adopted a ruse that he thought might prove profitable.

00:04:15.799 --> 00:04:19.439
And enable him to get a line on the game, McGill was playing.

00:04:19.915 --> 00:04:22.615
Though he heard Kate enter the house and closed the door.

00:04:23.005 --> 00:04:29.336
Patsy repeatedly glance back over his shoulder as if hit hard with her flashy style and personal beauty.

00:04:30.062 --> 00:04:33.182
Upon turning the corner and coming face to face with McGill.

00:04:33.182 --> 00:04:40.242
However, Patsy pretended to see him for the first time and realize that his own covert admiration of the woman had been detected.

00:04:40.891 --> 00:04:44.211
He grinned remarking rudely as if by way of explanation.

00:04:44.461 --> 00:04:47.911
Don't often see one, like her lucky for me, she went undercover.

00:04:47.911 --> 00:04:50.252
Why I've got a crook in my neck looking backward.

00:04:50.778 --> 00:04:52.139
McGill looked at him sharply.

00:04:52.738 --> 00:04:56.379
It was then that Patsy's hangdog disguise proved advantageous.

00:04:57.408 --> 00:05:00.778
McGill saw that he was not going to stop or so it appeared.

00:05:01.048 --> 00:05:02.603
And he said quickly, Wait a bit.

00:05:03.053 --> 00:05:03.528
Wait for what?

00:05:04.309 --> 00:05:05.639
Questioned Patsy pausing.

00:05:06.158 --> 00:05:08.449
McGill eyed him searchingly for several seconds.

00:05:09.149 --> 00:05:10.259
You'd wait for the skirt.

00:05:10.259 --> 00:05:10.738
Wouldn't ya?

00:05:10.915 --> 00:05:13.216
He asked with unmistakable significance.

00:05:13.630 --> 00:05:15.370
Patsy grinned again, expressively.

00:05:15.471 --> 00:05:16.761
Rather, he said.

00:05:17.166 --> 00:05:19.567
I'd wait for her till I had no leg to stand on.

00:05:19.980 --> 00:05:20.961
You might do worse pal.

00:05:21.411 --> 00:05:22.781
said McGill suggestively.

00:05:23.206 --> 00:05:24.526
You mean, I couldn't do better.

00:05:24.737 --> 00:05:28.547
Returned Patsy, but I'm not in the class with swell skirts, like her.

00:05:29.766 --> 00:05:31.307
Ah, she's not so swell.

00:05:31.656 --> 00:05:32.226
Isn't she.

00:05:32.336 --> 00:05:36.874
Patsy looks surprised and his eyes, took on a light well in keeping with his disguised countenance.

00:05:37.173 --> 00:05:40.233
He now shrewdly surmised that McGill had a use for him.

00:05:40.744 --> 00:05:47.463
That he had designs that he could not carry out alone and that he needed a Confederate, this suited Patsy to the letter.

00:05:48.064 --> 00:05:53.314
He added incredulously nevertheless, lest his inference and readiness might be suspected.

00:05:53.673 --> 00:05:54.663
That don't go down.

00:05:54.814 --> 00:05:55.673
There's nothing in it.

00:05:55.673 --> 00:05:56.423
Nothing for me.

00:05:56.843 --> 00:05:57.454
Think not?

00:05:57.843 --> 00:05:58.504
That's what.

00:05:59.004 --> 00:06:03.983
I can put you in a way to become very friendly with her, said McGill, with squinting scrutiny.

00:06:05.423 --> 00:06:06.173
You can.

00:06:06.240 --> 00:06:06.971
Patsy demanded.

00:06:07.396 --> 00:06:08.456
Surest thing, you know?

00:06:08.800 --> 00:06:10.331
But you'd have to take chances.

00:06:10.560 --> 00:06:11.661
McGill pointedly added.

00:06:12.190 --> 00:06:12.860
Chances eh?

00:06:13.630 --> 00:06:15.190
Chances cut no ice with me.

00:06:15.461 --> 00:06:16.711
I take the longest ever.

00:06:17.216 --> 00:06:18.117
Is that right?

00:06:18.726 --> 00:06:19.516
Asked McGill smiling.

00:06:20.310 --> 00:06:21.240
Try me and see.

00:06:21.721 --> 00:06:23.161
Said Patsy than abruptly.

00:06:23.521 --> 00:06:25.190
Say what's your game.

00:06:25.651 --> 00:06:27.990
You ain't stringing me along in this fashion for nothing.

00:06:28.511 --> 00:06:29.771
I'm trying to get your measure.

00:06:30.033 --> 00:06:31.264
McGill frankly admitted.

00:06:31.723 --> 00:06:32.863
Is that so.

00:06:33.613 --> 00:06:35.163
Patsy spoke with affected resentment.

00:06:36.283 --> 00:06:37.274
What do you want of it?

00:06:37.843 --> 00:06:38.684
How do you like it?

00:06:38.684 --> 00:06:39.584
As far as you've got.

00:06:40.119 --> 00:06:41.259
You look all right.

00:06:41.649 --> 00:06:43.209
McGill vouchsafed, dryly.

00:06:43.961 --> 00:06:46.062
Well, I ain't dolled up for anything.

00:06:46.391 --> 00:06:47.651
Patsy bluntly asserted.

00:06:48.057 --> 00:06:51.038
I'm just as you see me all on the surface take it or leave it.

00:06:51.038 --> 00:06:51.759
It's up to you.

00:06:52.199 --> 00:06:53.189
McGill was.

00:06:53.199 --> 00:06:54.307
Favorably impressed.

00:06:54.487 --> 00:06:55.747
And he waxed confidential.

00:06:56.129 --> 00:06:57.029
See here, pal.

00:06:57.180 --> 00:06:57.779
What's your name?

00:06:57.983 --> 00:06:58.574
He inquired.

00:06:59.089 --> 00:06:59.870
Jack Dolan.

00:07:00.170 --> 00:07:01.259
Said Patsy readily.

00:07:01.494 --> 00:07:02.644
D'ya hang out around here.

00:07:03.016 --> 00:07:03.916
Not so far away.

00:07:03.916 --> 00:07:04.757
I can't hoof it.

00:07:05.250 --> 00:07:06.240
What's your business.

00:07:06.660 --> 00:07:10.290
Chauffeur when I'm in on a job said Patsy at random.

00:07:10.769 --> 00:07:12.089
But he, again, shot luckily.

00:07:12.370 --> 00:07:13.470
I'm looking for one just now.

00:07:14.259 --> 00:07:15.529
But not looking too hard.

00:07:15.904 --> 00:07:17.305
Would you take a mighty soft one?

00:07:17.545 --> 00:07:18.485
McGill questioned.

00:07:19.305 --> 00:07:19.925
Would a duck swim.

00:07:20.588 --> 00:07:21.358
And take chances.

00:07:22.598 --> 00:07:25.718
Any you'll take, said Patsy, you can gamble on that.

00:07:26.259 --> 00:07:29.079
If I can gamble safely on it, McGill replied.

00:07:29.649 --> 00:07:32.199
I can put you on easy street and do it without much risk.

00:07:32.795 --> 00:07:33.435
You can eh?

00:07:33.850 --> 00:07:34.470
Believe me?

00:07:34.540 --> 00:07:35.439
I can.

00:07:35.923 --> 00:07:37.504
Say you cut loose then.

00:07:37.675 --> 00:07:38.872
Said Patsy drawing near.

00:07:39.182 --> 00:07:40.831
You don't need to beat around any more bushes.

00:07:41.492 --> 00:07:45.132
I'll go up against anything for coin, if there's enough of it or for that skirt.

00:07:45.482 --> 00:07:48.661
You start right in with the bridle off and hand out your dye stuff.

00:07:49.081 --> 00:07:50.271
You'll find me game, all right.

00:07:51.031 --> 00:07:55.021
McGill really thought so now, so well, had Patsy played his part.

00:07:55.562 --> 00:07:58.502
He laid his finger on Patsy's arm saying more impressively.

00:07:58.889 --> 00:07:59.908
Listen to me, Dolan.

00:08:00.389 --> 00:08:04.649
If you mean all you say I can put you in right to share in a barrel of money.

00:08:05.309 --> 00:08:09.016
It's not a case of crack a bank Or pull off any kind of a dangerous job.

00:08:09.497 --> 00:08:12.627
The coin is where it can be easily got, bearing one thing.

00:08:13.341 --> 00:08:13.610
Hmm.

00:08:13.670 --> 00:08:14.331
What's that?

00:08:14.841 --> 00:08:17.300
Forcing a certain party to say where it's hidden.

00:08:17.651 --> 00:08:17.870
The coin.

00:08:18.487 --> 00:08:18.966
Yeah.

00:08:19.187 --> 00:08:19.786
Who hid it?

00:08:20.476 --> 00:08:22.026
Nevermind who hid it dolan.

00:08:22.317 --> 00:08:22.867
McGill objected.

00:08:23.666 --> 00:08:25.107
Don't you get too inquisitive.

00:08:25.557 --> 00:08:28.456
The party who hid it had no legitimate claim on it.

00:08:28.687 --> 00:08:29.677
He stole it.

00:08:30.096 --> 00:08:31.666
Furthermore, he's dead.

00:08:32.636 --> 00:08:34.226
There will never be a kick from him.

00:08:34.917 --> 00:08:36.956
All we need to do in order to get to it.

00:08:37.226 --> 00:08:38.956
Is force a certain party to squeal.

00:08:39.561 --> 00:08:40.610
How much coin is there.

00:08:40.740 --> 00:08:43.721
Asked Patsy displaying a steadily increasing interest.

00:08:44.076 --> 00:08:45.157
A quarter million.

00:08:45.647 --> 00:08:47.897
Come again, say that just once more.

00:08:48.326 --> 00:08:49.826
A quarter million.

00:08:50.130 --> 00:08:52.020
I reckon I must have misunderstood.

00:08:52.471 --> 00:08:54.181
Say you ain't nutty are you?

00:08:54.181 --> 00:08:56.461
Questioned Patsy with a suspicious growl.

00:08:56.811 --> 00:08:58.360
Your dome ain't cracked, is it?

00:08:58.811 --> 00:08:59.980
Not a crack in it.

00:09:00.331 --> 00:09:01.888
McGill, earnestly assured him.

00:09:02.274 --> 00:09:03.835
I'm handing you straight goods.

00:09:04.134 --> 00:09:09.644
There's a quarter million that may be had for well Dolan for a mere bit o' chesty work.

00:09:10.855 --> 00:09:11.875
You wouldn't get in on it.

00:09:11.904 --> 00:09:12.325
Mind you.

00:09:12.835 --> 00:09:15.884
Only I cannot get word to the pals of mine and time to use them.

00:09:16.475 --> 00:09:17.465
I want a little help.

00:09:17.845 --> 00:09:18.565
For what.

00:09:18.942 --> 00:09:21.312
To take that skirt where she can be properly questioned.

00:09:21.697 --> 00:09:23.008
McGill said, pointedly.

00:09:23.253 --> 00:09:24.182
Take her where?

00:09:24.393 --> 00:09:26.342
Uh, to a house about three miles from here.

00:09:27.067 --> 00:09:28.777
What's a matter with a hack or a buzz wagon.

00:09:29.317 --> 00:09:31.157
Either would fit the bill said McGill.

00:09:31.986 --> 00:09:33.397
There's only one difficulty.

00:09:33.633 --> 00:09:34.043
What's that.

00:09:34.657 --> 00:09:36.106
The skirt says she won't go.

00:09:36.356 --> 00:09:38.096
McGill explained suggestively.

00:09:38.442 --> 00:09:40.052
Ah, oh, I see.

00:09:40.812 --> 00:09:42.432
Said Patsy with eyes dilating.

00:09:42.616 --> 00:09:43.937
You want to force her to go.

00:09:45.197 --> 00:09:46.496
That calls the turn.

00:09:46.647 --> 00:09:47.437
Answered McGill.

00:09:47.697 --> 00:09:52.527
She has agreed to meet me at the end of this street, just before dark to finish the spiel I was having with her.

00:09:53.067 --> 00:09:54.417
She wouldn't end it here for fear.

00:09:54.417 --> 00:09:56.366
She'd be seen from the house where she boards.

00:09:56.677 --> 00:09:57.256
I get ya.

00:09:57.657 --> 00:10:00.297
There are only a few scattered houses at the end of the street.

00:10:00.596 --> 00:10:02.667
And that's a direction I want to take her in.

00:10:02.756 --> 00:10:03.537
McGill added.

00:10:03.866 --> 00:10:07.981
Now if you're not a bird head, you can see how easy it can be done.

00:10:08.412 --> 00:10:09.812
Ya mean to kidnap her.

00:10:09.889 --> 00:10:10.860
Said Patsy quickly.

00:10:11.710 --> 00:10:12.922
Ah, that's the game.

00:10:13.392 --> 00:10:14.772
And you want me to help?

00:10:15.052 --> 00:10:16.322
If you've got the nerve.

00:10:16.748 --> 00:10:18.998
I've got nerve all right, declared Patsy.

00:10:19.067 --> 00:10:20.577
But, uh, what do I get for this job?

00:10:20.898 --> 00:10:23.567
Enough money to buy a corner lot on Broadway.

00:10:23.567 --> 00:10:25.038
McGill forcibly assured him.

00:10:25.488 --> 00:10:26.778
That's all I want of you too.

00:10:26.868 --> 00:10:28.697
And it's all the risk you have to take.

00:10:29.097 --> 00:10:30.868
When do I get the coin and how much.

00:10:31.238 --> 00:10:34.337
10,000 bucks possibly more within 24 hours.

00:10:34.717 --> 00:10:35.988
After nailing the skirt?

00:10:36.337 --> 00:10:37.038
Exactly.

00:10:37.337 --> 00:10:40.668
I'm hooked said Patsy, as if abruptly deciding to accept the offer.

00:10:40.932 --> 00:10:43.111
Spiel off what you want done and I'll do it.

00:10:43.477 --> 00:10:43.577
Shake.

00:10:44.085 --> 00:10:45.705
Said McGill extending his hand.

00:10:46.004 --> 00:10:47.254
I thought I read your mug correctly.

00:10:47.782 --> 00:10:52.011
My name is Mike McGill sometimes called Turk McGill and you'll find me all right.

00:10:52.011 --> 00:10:53.091
And always on the level.

00:10:55.312 --> 00:10:56.451
Well, if that goes, Mr.

00:10:56.451 --> 00:11:01.121
McGill, I'm your meat for any kind of a job said Patsy., A quarter million, eh?

00:11:01.741 --> 00:11:02.851
Say I'm afraid.

00:11:02.851 --> 00:11:03.501
I'll wake up.

00:11:04.292 --> 00:11:06.148
Hang it I'd Wade through blood for that.

00:11:06.489 --> 00:11:07.099
What am I to do?

00:11:07.827 --> 00:11:08.957
We'll need a touring car.

00:11:09.150 --> 00:11:09.831
said McGill.

00:11:10.191 --> 00:11:11.961
I know a garage where I can swipe one.

00:11:12.418 --> 00:11:14.587
Ah, swiping, it might make trouble for us.

00:11:14.998 --> 00:11:15.748
Could you hire it?

00:11:15.977 --> 00:11:16.638
Sure.

00:11:16.847 --> 00:11:18.138
If I had a price.

00:11:18.235 --> 00:11:18.936
Said Patsy.

00:11:20.515 --> 00:11:23.096
Here's a, yeah, here's a$20 note.

00:11:23.456 --> 00:11:24.135
Will that be enough?

00:11:24.375 --> 00:11:27.302
Oh, more than enough! Take it then said, McGill.

00:11:27.489 --> 00:11:29.589
It shows you too, that, I mean, business.

00:11:30.298 --> 00:11:31.658
I'm wise to that, all right.

00:11:32.019 --> 00:11:35.589
Do your part Dolan, and you'll get a hundred bucks for every dime of that 20.

00:11:35.609 --> 00:11:36.989
McGill added impressively.

00:11:38.009 --> 00:11:39.089
You'll leave it to me.

00:11:39.229 --> 00:11:40.078
Patsy rejoined.

00:11:40.458 --> 00:11:42.318
That skirt is as good as on her way.

00:11:43.759 --> 00:11:46.619
Who is this gangster that wants the kidnapped Kate Crandell.

00:11:47.119 --> 00:11:49.788
And what exactly has Patsy gotten himself into?

00:11:50.639 --> 00:11:52.818
Can he send word to Nick Carter in time.

00:11:53.658 --> 00:11:57.708
Well, we'll find out in the next exciting episode of Nick Carter.

00:11:57.719 --> 00:11:58.528
Master detective.

00:12:00.918 --> 00:12:01.609
Hey gang.
