The Call of Death; Or Nick Carter's Clever Assistant, Pt 1

Send us a Text Message.

Nick Carter, a detective, is confident that James Nordeck committed a recent bank burglary. Inspector Mallory also points out that Nordeck has a daughter, Nancy, and shows Nordeck's criminal record. Nick informs Mallory that he was tipped off by his old friend Darby Moore about Nordeck's tendency to be cheated by his confederates. Inspector Mallory receives a curious letter, accompanied by a large sum of money, requesting a proper burial for a man presumed to be dead. Nick decides to cancel his visit to Harlem to investigate the letter after being urgently requested to meet a woman named Miss Farley. He hands over the task to Chick.

Before Nick leaves, he learns that the letter, along with the money, appears to be genuine. Inspector Mallory and Chick head to Harlem with Nick's chauffeur, while Nick stays behind to address Miss Farley's urgent matter.

This peculiar case unfolds as Miss Farley beckons Nick to hear her out, hinting that it’s a matter of life or death. She requests that Nick urgently spends time with her, offering to pay any amount. After making the necessary arrangements for Chick to proceed with the visit to Harlem, Nick agrees to leave with Miss Farley. Chick steps into the car and directs the chauffeur to 82 P---- Street in Harlem.

As they prepare to leave, a limousine pulls up and Nick is intercepted by Miss Farley, causing him to change his plans. He instructs Chick to proceed with the Harlem visit, addressing the matter with her, and apologizes to Inspector Mallory. Chick agrees to assume the case in Harlem, ensuring that it will be resolved without much trouble.

00:00:01.739 --> 00:00:06.870
Hello again, and welcome to another episode of forward into the past.

00:00:07.410 --> 00:00:08.150
I'm J.C.

00:00:08.150 --> 00:00:08.330
Rede.

00:00:08.730 --> 00:00:10.199
your host and narrator.

00:00:10.470 --> 00:00:16.170
And today we're kicking off another exciting adventure in the Nick Carter mysteries of yesteryear.

00:00:16.469 --> 00:00:21.690
This one called the call of death or Nick Carter's clever assistant.

00:00:22.800 --> 00:00:37.740
And speaking of assistance, if you've been listening to the last two, Nick Carter stories or read any of the other Nick Carter mysteries on project Gutenberg, or even seeing the original story papers in a digital library, like the one hosted at Villanova university.

00:00:38.219 --> 00:00:43.890
Then you know that our master detective is assisted by two very clever assistance.

00:00:44.340 --> 00:00:50.640
Patsy Garvin and chick Carter, but who exactly are these two fellows?

00:00:51.299 --> 00:00:59.429
Well, if you lived in the United States around the turn of the 20th century, Especially somewhere that had a huge influx of immigrants from Europe.

00:00:59.969 --> 00:01:07.769
You would recognize the name Patsy as a sort of nickname for an Irish immigrant, with the given name of Patrick.

00:01:08.489 --> 00:01:16.409
The character of Patsy Garvin was originally a boot black, a shoeshine boy or a newsboy, depending on the storyline.

00:01:16.799 --> 00:01:20.790
And Nick would use the clever lad to assist him in his mysteries.

00:01:21.659 --> 00:01:23.370
As young Patsy grew older.

00:01:23.730 --> 00:01:28.950
He eventually became a great assistant detective to Nick and appeared in several stories.

00:01:29.430 --> 00:01:30.390
Strangely though.

00:01:30.629 --> 00:01:33.900
When Nick Carter mysteries began being broadcast on the radio.

00:01:34.349 --> 00:01:49.709
The character of Patsy became Nick Carter's female secretary, but she still assisted the master detective in well over 700 stories that were broadcast on the mutual radio network in the 1940s.

00:01:50.609 --> 00:01:51.030
Now.

00:01:51.359 --> 00:01:57.329
Chick is a little more unusual of a name and believe it or not, it's a short version of the name.

00:01:57.629 --> 00:01:58.500
Chickering.

00:01:59.250 --> 00:02:06.269
Uh, according to several websites that I've scoped out for information on Nick Carter stories and story papers and dime novels in general.

00:02:06.689 --> 00:02:12.659
Nick found the young man by the name of Chickering Valentine while solving a case in Nevada.

00:02:13.409 --> 00:02:17.039
The young ranch hand look very much like a young Nick Carter.

00:02:17.310 --> 00:02:21.719
So the master detective took young chick under his wing.

00:02:22.710 --> 00:02:25.250
Sorry, I just couldn't help myself with that pun.

00:02:26.219 --> 00:02:31.800
The boy shortened his name to chick and took on his adopted father's last name, Carter.

00:02:32.610 --> 00:02:34.800
Nick taught the young man, all he knew about.

00:02:35.009 --> 00:02:36.960
Well just about everything.

00:02:37.199 --> 00:02:40.979
And eventually chick became an accomplished detective of his own.

00:02:41.819 --> 00:02:48.210
Street and Smith, the publishers for the Nick Carter mysteries gave chick Carter his own series.

00:02:48.509 --> 00:02:53.030
And when Nick Carter stories transitioned to radio well, so did Chick.

00:02:53.580 --> 00:02:59.009
He had his own radio series for two years alongside the Nick Carter radio program.

00:02:59.849 --> 00:03:03.719
Now going back to those original printed stories in the New York weekly.

00:03:04.080 --> 00:03:10.319
A great, many of those stories are often seen with the byline of edited by Chickering Carter.

00:03:10.800 --> 00:03:20.639
And they were all written by Nicholas Carter, which was of course the house pseudonym for the dozens of writers, crafting out these fascinating stories.

00:03:21.300 --> 00:03:26.699
Well, speaking of fascinating stories, let's get on with our next entry in the Nick Carter mysteries.

00:03:26.909 --> 00:03:32.520
This one entitled the call of death or Nick Carter's clever assistant.

00:03:35.520 --> 00:03:41.099
The call of death or Nick Carter's clever assistant edited by Chickering Carter.

00:03:41.699 --> 00:03:42.569
Chapter one.

00:03:43.080 --> 00:03:44.129
A curious letter.

00:03:46.080 --> 00:03:50.610
There's no question in my mind and specter as to who did the job said, Nick Carter.

00:03:51.659 --> 00:03:52.740
You feel sure of it then?

00:03:54.000 --> 00:03:55.770
As sure as water runs downhill.

00:03:56.340 --> 00:03:58.620
I'd refer, of course, to the mechanical part of the work.

00:03:59.189 --> 00:04:01.530
I looked it over on the morning, following the burglary.

00:04:01.800 --> 00:04:03.240
Every part of the looted vault.

00:04:03.629 --> 00:04:08.340
And I am as sure of the crack man's identity as if I had seen him getting in his work.

00:04:09.120 --> 00:04:14.310
Only one yegg in the business has the mechanical genius to crack a vault as that was cracked.

00:04:14.900 --> 00:04:15.819
James Nordeck.

00:04:16.209 --> 00:04:16.720
Surely.

00:04:17.410 --> 00:04:21.310
I have seen Nordics work before, and I knew it when I see it.

00:04:21.759 --> 00:04:24.790
It is invariably stamped with his mechanical ingenuity.

00:04:25.389 --> 00:04:28.269
Jim Nortek is in a class of his own at that business.

00:04:29.740 --> 00:04:31.689
Here's his mug front and profile chief.

00:04:32.050 --> 00:04:33.040
Also his record.

00:04:33.430 --> 00:04:34.269
Have a look at them.

00:04:34.850 --> 00:04:47.120
The last came from chick Carter, the celebrated detective's senior assistant, and the remarks of both were addressed to inspector Mallory, then head of the detective force identified with the New York police department.

00:04:47.839 --> 00:04:52.279
They were discussing the recent burglary of a savings bank up in Westchester county.

00:04:52.639 --> 00:04:54.769
A crime committed about a week before.

00:04:54.990 --> 00:05:04.709
Which the remarkably skillful drilling of the vault for the use of explosives, as well as other details of the felonious work, plainly showed it to have been that of professional cracksmen.

00:05:05.220 --> 00:05:08.100
As may be inferred by the remarks that he had just made.

00:05:08.519 --> 00:05:10.649
It revealed something more to Nick Carter.

00:05:11.129 --> 00:05:20.699
The identity of one of the criminals, at least with certain characteristics of whose skillful work along such infamous lines, the detective was already familiar.

00:05:21.170 --> 00:05:23.629
Though discovered before having completed their work.

00:05:23.990 --> 00:05:44.360
The burglars had succeeded in getting away with nearly$200,000 in cash bonds and negotiable securities, but not until one of their number had been seriously wounded with the revolver of a citizen who had heard and pursued them as was evidenced by a trail of blood, to the motor car in which they escaped with their plunder.

00:05:44.860 --> 00:05:46.870
None of it had since been recovered.

00:05:47.439 --> 00:06:01.040
Negotiations with the crooks had been undertaken by the bank officials through the newspapers with a view to recovering part of the stolen funds and a liberal reward had also been offered for information leading to the discovery and arrest of the thieves.

00:06:01.689 --> 00:06:05.529
All of these endeavors, however, had proved entirely futile.

00:06:06.029 --> 00:06:09.329
The trail of the crooks had in fact been hopelessly lost.

00:06:09.779 --> 00:06:26.220
Nor was there any clue to their identity aside from the opinion expressed by Nick Carter on the day, following the crime, when he had been called upon to inspect the work of the burglars, despite the fact that he had declined to take the case in conjunction with the police and detectives already employed on it.

00:06:26.699 --> 00:06:40.649
Nick's views had been mentioned to inspector Malory, and this had occasioned his visit that morning and the discussion then in progress in the business office of the detectives Madison avenue residence, then occupied only by the three persons mentioned.

00:06:41.620 --> 00:06:45.930
Inspector Mallory took the card tendered by chick Carter with the remarks above noted.

00:06:46.430 --> 00:06:59.089
It had been taken by chick from a large cabinet of drawers containing the Bertillon signaletic cards of thousands of other crooks and it contained two photographs and the criminal record of the man then under discussion.

00:06:59.589 --> 00:07:03.550
The face that met the inspectors gaze was not a prepossessing one.

00:07:04.240 --> 00:07:12.699
It was that of a man of 50, a hard and sinister face with a low brow and narrow eyes, a hooked nose, like the beak of a bird of prey.

00:07:13.129 --> 00:07:16.990
A square jaw and thin lips drawn downward at the corners.

00:07:17.560 --> 00:07:20.709
A more evil and cruel face than one often viewed.

00:07:21.180 --> 00:07:22.709
He looks like a bad egg, indeed.

00:07:22.740 --> 00:07:23.100
Chick.

00:07:23.269 --> 00:07:26.180
Said inspector Mallory, grimly inspecting the two photographs.

00:07:26.649 --> 00:07:27.850
His looks flatter him.

00:07:28.209 --> 00:07:28.899
Chick replied.

00:07:29.279 --> 00:07:30.699
He's the worst in the business.

00:07:31.189 --> 00:07:35.959
His record corroborates you, said the inspector while he read the criminal career noted on the card.

00:07:36.259 --> 00:07:40.639
He appears to have been extraordinarily lucky, however, in alluding arrest and doing time.

00:07:41.079 --> 00:07:42.250
Lucky is right.

00:07:42.399 --> 00:07:43.089
Nick, put in.

00:07:43.399 --> 00:07:48.259
He's been peculiarly fortunate in that respect Mallory, but very unlucky in others.

00:07:48.740 --> 00:07:49.389
How so Nick?

00:07:49.870 --> 00:07:52.870
I happen to know something about the inside history of that rascal.

00:07:53.029 --> 00:07:53.839
Nick explained.

00:07:54.589 --> 00:08:00.319
I got it from one of his old pals, Darby Moore who died in Matawan less than a year ago.

00:08:00.879 --> 00:08:01.540
I knew him.

00:08:01.660 --> 00:08:02.709
Inspector Mallory said.

00:08:03.189 --> 00:08:07.420
Aside from his legitimate trade as a machinist at which Nordic is an expert.

00:08:07.779 --> 00:08:10.420
He has absolutely no head on his shoulders.

00:08:10.750 --> 00:08:11.439
Nick proceeded.

00:08:11.980 --> 00:08:18.339
He could not frame up and pull off a job of any size to say nothing of this savings bank break if his life depended on it.

00:08:18.970 --> 00:08:22.029
He can work to advantage only when guided by a capable leader.

00:08:22.689 --> 00:08:26.709
Take it from me, Mallory, this Westchester job was directed by such a man.

00:08:26.980 --> 00:08:28.329
Not by Jim Nordic.

00:08:28.689 --> 00:08:31.810
There was a much bigger man than he behind the gun.

00:08:32.299 --> 00:08:33.590
Do you know him, Nick?

00:08:33.679 --> 00:08:35.610
Questioned Mallory with sharper scrutiny.

00:08:35.929 --> 00:08:37.039
Hmm, I do not.

00:08:37.460 --> 00:08:38.990
Or do you suspect is identity?

00:08:39.190 --> 00:08:39.639
No.

00:08:40.169 --> 00:08:41.340
What do you mean by Nordics?

00:08:41.340 --> 00:08:43.200
Having been peculiarly unfortunate.

00:08:43.629 --> 00:08:48.100
Well in that he has been repeatedly cheated by his Confederates out of most of the share of the plunder.

00:08:48.250 --> 00:08:48.909
Nick explained.

00:08:49.629 --> 00:08:55.480
He's been an easy mark in that respect ever since his wife died, something like a dozen years ago.

00:08:56.139 --> 00:09:01.779
She was a shrewd English woman, but thoroughly unscrupulous who looked after his interests and handled his money.

00:09:02.500 --> 00:09:03.220
Since her death.

00:09:03.220 --> 00:09:10.480
However, though he has been known to have had a hand in numerous profitable jobs, Nordeck has been hard up most of the time.

00:09:11.019 --> 00:09:13.509
Through having been victimized by his Confederates.

00:09:13.929 --> 00:09:14.679
Exactly.

00:09:15.070 --> 00:09:17.440
He now fights shy of trusting them even.

00:09:17.870 --> 00:09:19.639
You got all this from Darby Moore.

00:09:20.070 --> 00:09:20.580
Yes.

00:09:20.940 --> 00:09:23.370
I had an interview with him on the day that he died.

00:09:23.940 --> 00:09:25.350
I know he told me the truth.

00:09:25.769 --> 00:09:26.129
Mm.

00:09:26.909 --> 00:09:29.519
Well, this card states, a Nordic has a daughter.

00:09:29.549 --> 00:09:30.659
Who's also a crook.

00:09:31.139 --> 00:09:31.950
That is correct.

00:09:32.250 --> 00:09:33.039
Do you know, her?

00:09:33.240 --> 00:09:34.139
Anything about her?

00:09:34.559 --> 00:09:35.340
I have seen her.

00:09:35.490 --> 00:09:36.179
Nick replied.

00:09:36.409 --> 00:09:43.009
I saw her less than a month ago, in fact, which is another reason why I feel sure that Nordic had a hand in this burglary.

00:09:43.450 --> 00:09:44.490
She sticks to him, eh?

00:09:44.870 --> 00:09:47.419
That's what they've never been separated.

00:09:47.870 --> 00:09:53.539
I knew the moment I saw her that Jim Nordic was in these parts and that something was likely to come off.

00:09:54.019 --> 00:09:55.610
Why didn't you track the girl to cover?

00:09:56.059 --> 00:09:58.700
It was impossible Mallory under the circumstances.

00:09:59.070 --> 00:09:59.309
Why?

00:09:59.309 --> 00:09:59.759
So.

00:10:00.129 --> 00:10:05.350
Well, she was in an elevated train going north and I was in another going south, smiled Nick.

00:10:05.649 --> 00:10:09.700
Both trains had stopped at a station and I saw her through one of the windows.

00:10:10.600 --> 00:10:13.750
I could not wish myself from one train to another.

00:10:15.220 --> 00:10:17.799
True, inspector Mallory admitted, laughing.

00:10:18.580 --> 00:10:20.409
Have you seen the girl since then?

00:10:20.909 --> 00:10:21.299
No.

00:10:21.710 --> 00:10:22.850
Um, how old is she?

00:10:23.269 --> 00:10:25.250
Well, not much over 20 said, Nick.

00:10:25.850 --> 00:10:28.399
Her name is Nancy Nordic, though.

00:10:28.399 --> 00:10:30.950
I guess she uses an alias most of the time.

00:10:31.669 --> 00:10:32.000
Mm.

00:10:32.059 --> 00:10:32.960
Yes, no doubt.

00:10:33.100 --> 00:10:34.419
Mallory dryly allowed.

00:10:34.889 --> 00:10:38.190
She looked very seedy as well as I could judge through the car window.

00:10:38.330 --> 00:10:38.960
Nick added.

00:10:39.529 --> 00:10:44.840
This savings bank break may replenish her purse, however, and put Jim Nordic in funds.

00:10:45.110 --> 00:10:49.279
If his pals don't bunko him, he ought to be well healed for some little time.

00:10:49.279 --> 00:10:52.490
Uh, unless some of your men succeed in rounding up this gang.

00:10:52.730 --> 00:10:55.190
I infer that there is no immediate prospect of it.

00:10:55.679 --> 00:10:57.899
No, I, I am sorry to say.

00:10:58.049 --> 00:10:59.279
Inspector Mallory admitted.

00:10:59.700 --> 00:11:04.720
I see that the bank directors have offered a reward of$10,000 for the recovery of the plunder.

00:11:05.090 --> 00:11:05.539
Yes.

00:11:05.899 --> 00:11:07.370
They can well afford to pay for it.

00:11:07.909 --> 00:11:10.100
And then some put in chick pointedly.

00:11:10.610 --> 00:11:13.190
I doubt that any of the gang who did that job will squeal.

00:11:13.220 --> 00:11:18.139
However, for it's smacks of crooks who keep their traps closed under any and all circumstances.

00:11:18.500 --> 00:11:19.100
If they.

00:11:19.200 --> 00:11:20.009
Stop a moment.

00:11:20.460 --> 00:11:21.320
Nick interposed.

00:11:21.860 --> 00:11:22.970
What is wanted, Joseph.

00:11:23.490 --> 00:11:27.929
The office door had been opened by Nick's man, servant, who then pause respectfully on the threshold.

00:11:28.350 --> 00:11:28.950
Detective.

00:11:28.950 --> 00:11:30.210
Vallon is here, sir.

00:11:30.469 --> 00:11:31.109
he replied.

00:11:31.448 --> 00:11:33.158
He wants to see Inspector Mallory.

00:11:33.609 --> 00:11:34.839
Vallon here.

00:11:34.999 --> 00:11:36.479
Exclaimed Mallory, surprisedly.

00:11:36.969 --> 00:11:37.899
Let him come in, Nick.

00:11:37.989 --> 00:11:39.188
I'll see what he wants.

00:11:39.649 --> 00:11:41.418
Show him in Joseph, Nick directed.

00:11:41.958 --> 00:11:50.509
He entered a moment later, a plain clothes man from police headquarters, with whom both Nick and chick shook hands cordially while he was briefly stating his mission.

00:11:50.979 --> 00:11:53.168
I've got a special delivery for you inspector.

00:11:53.318 --> 00:11:53.818
Said He.

00:11:54.308 --> 00:11:57.729
It's marked private and rush, and I reckon it might be very important.

00:11:58.119 --> 00:12:00.428
The Lieutenant said, I'd be likely to find you here.

00:12:00.428 --> 00:12:01.808
So here I am.

00:12:01.928 --> 00:12:02.889
And here's the letter.

00:12:03.399 --> 00:12:06.278
Inspector Mallory took it and glanced at the superscription.

00:12:06.938 --> 00:12:16.389
It was addressed with a lead pencil and in a somewhat course, irregular hand, which with the misspelling of several words, plainly evinced the writer's lack of education.

00:12:17.288 --> 00:12:22.599
Prominent in the lower corners of the envelope, were two words, rush and private.

00:12:23.068 --> 00:12:23.519
Huh.

00:12:23.619 --> 00:12:25.448
Mallory grunted with a puzzled expression.

00:12:26.048 --> 00:12:27.548
Mailed this morning in Harlem.

00:12:28.389 --> 00:12:29.589
I don't know the hand.

00:12:29.928 --> 00:12:32.109
I never saw one quite so scrawly.

00:12:32.619 --> 00:12:34.259
It may be important nevertheless Vallon.

00:12:34.259 --> 00:12:34.989
And as you say.

00:12:35.359 --> 00:12:40.068
Chief Mallory broke the seal while speaking then drew out the enclosed sheet of paper.

00:12:40.349 --> 00:12:43.089
A folded bank note, slipped from it and fell to the floor.

00:12:43.568 --> 00:12:44.568
By Jove chief.

00:12:44.629 --> 00:12:45.828
That's a good beginning.

00:12:45.958 --> 00:12:47.099
Said Chick laughing.

00:12:47.548 --> 00:12:48.599
I believe your story.

00:12:48.759 --> 00:12:50.948
Mallory replied, bending to pick up the bank note.

00:12:51.399 --> 00:12:55.119
Hello, 50 bucks too, and a brand new bill.

00:12:55.599 --> 00:12:58.058
I could stand a gift of this kind every day in the year.

00:12:58.928 --> 00:13:03.009
It was indeed a crisp brand new bank note for$50.

00:13:03.349 --> 00:13:09.499
Nick Carter eyed the inspector more narrowly when he opened and read the letter, noting his gradual change of expression.

00:13:09.798 --> 00:13:12.239
By thunder! Here's a curious case.

00:13:12.379 --> 00:13:13.788
Mallory exclaimed looking up.

00:13:14.418 --> 00:13:18.139
It cannot be a hoax, not with 50 semolians backing up the story.

00:13:18.649 --> 00:13:19.399
Have a look, Nick.

00:13:19.759 --> 00:13:20.509
Read it aloud.

00:13:20.808 --> 00:13:23.568
Nick took the letter and read it aloud as directed.

00:13:23.938 --> 00:13:26.688
A penciled illiterate scrawl as follows.

00:13:26.969 --> 00:13:33.749
Mr inspector Mallory, there'd be a dead man up in number 82 P street, Harlem.

00:13:34.469 --> 00:13:35.548
I want him planted.

00:13:35.548 --> 00:13:35.879
Right.

00:13:36.119 --> 00:13:38.519
But I ain't got no time to tend to it.

00:13:39.028 --> 00:13:42.089
I know you are dead square when it comes to a showdown.

00:13:42.089 --> 00:13:47.249
So I send you the coin to foot the bills with, and I asked you to tend to him.

00:13:47.818 --> 00:13:51.328
Get him a good box with a black cloth on the outside of it.

00:13:51.629 --> 00:13:52.948
And silver grips.

00:13:53.729 --> 00:13:58.938
I would ask you to get a silver plate to only, I can't tell you his moniker.

00:13:59.639 --> 00:14:02.249
I thank you beforehand, knowing you will tend to him.

00:14:02.698 --> 00:14:04.889
Please have a prayer said for him.

00:14:05.369 --> 00:14:08.278
Nick Carter read this rude scrawl indifferently at first.

00:14:08.609 --> 00:14:10.979
Then glanced at it again, more carefully.

00:14:11.278 --> 00:14:16.589
Mallory watching him, detected a sharper gleam deep down in his more serious eyes.

00:14:17.129 --> 00:14:19.168
He straightened up and inquired abruptly.

00:14:19.479 --> 00:14:20.349
What'd you think of it?

00:14:20.889 --> 00:14:22.688
It's on the level said, Nick.

00:14:23.168 --> 00:14:24.879
The woman means what she says.

00:14:25.288 --> 00:14:25.798
Woman.

00:14:25.918 --> 00:14:27.198
Questioned Mallory quickly.

00:14:27.619 --> 00:14:28.908
How do you know a woman wrote it?

00:14:29.269 --> 00:14:30.168
It isn't signed.

00:14:30.519 --> 00:14:30.938
True.

00:14:31.359 --> 00:14:33.099
And the writing looks like a man's?

00:14:33.438 --> 00:14:34.129
True again.

00:14:34.509 --> 00:14:36.668
Why do you think then that a woman wrote it?

00:14:36.999 --> 00:14:37.568
Sentiment.

00:14:37.668 --> 00:14:38.719
Said Nick tersely.

00:14:38.958 --> 00:14:41.479
It appears between the lines illiterate though they are.

00:14:42.048 --> 00:14:46.938
We very seldom find it in men of the class, in which the writer of this evidently falls.

00:14:47.264 --> 00:14:50.188
A fallen class, evidently remarked, detective Vallon.

00:14:50.658 --> 00:14:51.408
Possibly.

00:14:51.548 --> 00:14:52.119
Nick allowed.

00:14:52.629 --> 00:14:55.239
She has a high opinion of you Mallory, all the same.

00:14:55.568 --> 00:14:56.769
Very properly too.

00:14:57.278 --> 00:14:57.668
Huh.

00:14:57.849 --> 00:14:58.448
Thanks.

00:14:58.609 --> 00:15:00.198
Blurted the chief a bit gruffly.

00:15:01.249 --> 00:15:03.379
You'd better go up there and look into the case.

00:15:03.828 --> 00:15:05.958
$50 will more than foot the bills.

00:15:06.619 --> 00:15:10.698
It's quite remarkable by the way, where the writer raised that amount at.

00:15:12.048 --> 00:15:13.969
Let me see that bank note, Mallory.

00:15:14.318 --> 00:15:15.308
It looks all right.

00:15:15.438 --> 00:15:16.678
said the inspector complying.

00:15:17.173 --> 00:15:17.644
True.

00:15:17.774 --> 00:15:21.708
Said, Nick, it's not a counterfeit, but evidently it's fresh from.

00:15:23.719 --> 00:15:26.899
Yes by Jove, you had better go up there, he abruptly digressed.

00:15:27.288 --> 00:15:29.538
If you think well of it, Mallory, I'll go with you.

00:15:29.879 --> 00:15:33.318
I shall be more than pleased declared Mallory with a look of surprise.

00:15:33.688 --> 00:15:38.698
I'll have my chauffeur bring around the touring car, added Nick touching an electric button on his desk.

00:15:39.269 --> 00:15:43.298
There will be room for you chick and for Valen also, if he cares to go.

00:15:43.589 --> 00:15:44.219
I'm hooked.

00:15:44.359 --> 00:15:45.369
Vallon quickly nodded.

00:15:45.668 --> 00:15:46.538
Count me in.

00:15:46.999 --> 00:15:58.249
As the four detectives were descending the steps of Nick's residence, five minutes later, however, at which his touring car was then standing, a rapidly driven limousine approached and swerved to the curbing nearby.

00:15:58.719 --> 00:16:07.269
Nick paused instinctively then approached to meet a handsome fashionably clad young woman who had hurriedly alighted and drawn nearer.

00:16:07.578 --> 00:16:08.749
You were going away, Mr.

00:16:08.749 --> 00:16:10.339
Carter, and I am just in time.

00:16:10.479 --> 00:16:12.788
She said quietly yet in some excitement.

00:16:13.269 --> 00:16:14.589
You must postpone it.

00:16:14.979 --> 00:16:16.599
I must see you alone immediately.

00:16:16.719 --> 00:16:17.948
No, no, don't refuse.

00:16:18.259 --> 00:16:19.808
I'll not take no for an answer.

00:16:20.109 --> 00:16:21.369
I really must see you.

00:16:21.609 --> 00:16:23.408
It's a case of life or death.

00:16:23.839 --> 00:16:25.509
What is the trouble miss Farley?

00:16:25.678 --> 00:16:27.808
Nick gravely inquired, noting her paleness.

00:16:28.129 --> 00:16:30.349
I cannot tell you here, not here.

00:16:30.619 --> 00:16:31.308
She whispered.

00:16:31.658 --> 00:16:33.558
Do please give me your time.

00:16:33.859 --> 00:16:35.269
Money is no object, Mr.

00:16:35.269 --> 00:16:35.899
Carter, and.

00:16:35.969 --> 00:16:36.328
Hush.

00:16:36.869 --> 00:16:38.578
Nick turned to the men in the touring car.

00:16:39.139 --> 00:16:41.188
I must cut out the visit to Harlem, Inspector.

00:16:41.328 --> 00:16:42.708
He said significantly.

00:16:43.038 --> 00:16:43.928
Chick will go with you.

00:16:43.928 --> 00:16:44.578
however.

00:16:45.099 --> 00:16:46.869
Oh, well, you understand.

00:16:47.158 --> 00:16:48.298
Certainly Nick certainly.

00:16:48.418 --> 00:16:49.859
Inspector Mallory assured him.

00:16:50.629 --> 00:16:51.778
There is nothing involved in it.

00:16:52.188 --> 00:16:54.058
Chick will inform you later of all the facts.

00:16:54.328 --> 00:16:56.009
Uh, no apology is necessary.

00:16:56.649 --> 00:16:57.519
Let her go, Danny.

00:16:57.798 --> 00:17:00.519
Chick directed when Nick turned to rejoined the waiting woman.

00:17:00.999 --> 00:17:02.859
Number 82 P street, Harlem.

00:17:03.158 --> 00:17:04.209
Eat it up lively.

00:17:06.571 --> 00:17:08.402
Who was that mysterious woman.

00:17:08.402 --> 00:17:10.231
And why did Nick stay back?

00:17:10.711 --> 00:17:14.221
Who is the dead man that the others detectives are investigating?

00:17:14.761 --> 00:17:18.961
And what does any of it have to do with the bank robbery in Westchester?

00:17:19.442 --> 00:17:26.852
We'll find out next time when we continue the story of the call of death or Nick Carter's clever assistant.

00:17:30.001 --> 00:17:31.021
